Mission Statement

The Imperial Furniture Collection

Vienna Furniture Museum is a museum of culture and history.

The Imperial Furniture Collection • Vienna Furniture Museum seeks to interpret the culture of interior design and everyday life at the imperial court as well as lifestyles and interiors up to the present day. It showcases a unique collection of furnishings dating from its foundation by Maria Theresa through to the end of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The collection is regularly augmented with acquisitions of objects from the era of Emperor Franz Joseph to the present day. The Museum displays a representative selection from its extensive holdings, presenting them in their social, political, cultural and historical context.

Regular temporary exhibitions complement the presentation of the permanent collection. The spectrum of themes ranges from developments in interior design and the history of the Habsburg dynasty to various aspects of everyday life and furniture design. In addition, the Imperial Furniture Collection • Vienna Furniture Museum is a major partner of the Imperial Austria marketing platform which promotes culture and tourism.

The Museum is distinguished by its unique form of presentation which has no parallel anywhere else in the world. Occupying a middle ground between conventional museum display and storage depository, the Museum comprises interiors exemplifying particular styles, room ensembles, ‘walk-in depositories’ and individual objects of consummate craftsmanship.

The Imperial Furniture Collection • Vienna Furniture Museum is aimed at Austrian and international visitors who are interested in the cultural history of the Habsburgs, occupational groups concerned with craftsmanship and the applied arts, individuals interested in design, and tourists with a general interest in culture.

Research into and curatorship of the Imperial Furniture Collection • Vienna Furniture Museum is carried out under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy, Department II, Division 6, while restoration and conservation work together with the inventorying of the holdings is the province of the Bundesmobilienverwaltung, the body in charge of furnishings in state ownership that are of particular artistic and cultural significance. Schloss Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H is the entity responsible for visitor operations and commercial and operative management.
