Sisi on Corfu, Kaulbach

Sisi on Corfu

26.9.2012 - 27.1.2013

To mark the 175th anniversary of the birth of Empress Elisabeth, the Imperial Furniture Collection is mounting an exhibition exploring the empress’s connection with Greece and the island of Corfu.
The empress first visited the island in 1861, returning fifteen years later to commission a palatial villa called the Achilleion on ‘this glorious spot’, as she called Corfu.
The exhibition focuses on the well-travelled empress’s interest in the culture and archaeology of Greece, and her life at her Greek retreat, the Achilleion. It will showcase numerous original objects including furniture, clothing and accessories together with individual artefacts from her collection of antiquities. Some of these valuable exhibits will be on public display for the first time.
Another aspect explored by the exhibition will be the empress’s longing for far-off lands and her great love of travelling. Her preferred modes of transport were the yacht Miramar and the luxurious court saloon car. Items on display will include a model of the yacht together with travelling costumes and equipment.

Emperor Maximilian of Mexico

Maximilian of Mexico

March – June 2013

The spring exhibition for 2013 is dedicated to Emperor Maximilian of Mexico (1832 – 1867). It centres on the life and works of Emperor Franz Joseph's handsome and talented younger brother. Using personal items which belonged to the Archduke, mementos, photographs and written sources, a biographical framework will be built up around the colourful life of the Austrian archduke. This will cover topics ranging from his youth in the Viennese Imperial court, his marriage to Charlotte of Belgium, and his work as Commander-in-Chief of the Austrian Imperial Navy, to his reign in Mexico and his tragic death by shooting squad.
The exhibition will also focus on Maximilian's building activities. Firstly it will reconstruct the history of the appointment of Miramare Castle in Trieste, documenting this and making it tangible through new exhibition pieces recently discovered in the Federal Furniture Depot, including furniture, jewellery boxes, souvenirs from oriental travels, scientifically significant ethnological objects, weapons, etc.
