Hello Biedermeier!
Living in Crisis.
Recently the terms Biedermeier and neo-Biedermeier have been cropping up with increasing frequency, in analogy to the retreat of the Austrian middle classes into domestic seclusion between 1815 and 1848 in reaction to the political circumstances of the time. Then as now, in times of crisis it seems that people seek the harmony, security and stability they so desperately need within their own four walls. Set up beside the Biedermeier alcoves of the Hofmobiliendepot, Robert Rüf’s spatial installation will take this new ‘Biedermeier era’ as its point of reference.
Robert Rüf Industrial Design
Aged only 28, Robert Rüf is one of a highly-promising emerging generation of Austrian designers. In 2005 he graduated with a degree in Industrial Design from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, establishing his own design studio in 2007. His portfolio contains a number of prize-winning projects that have been exhibited internationally; in 2007 he was among the prize-winners of the Adolf Loos Austrian State Award for Design. His origins in Vorarlberg are reflected in a number of his products whose archetypal counterparts in form and material can be found in rustic dwellings in the Bregenzer Wald. His love of design and craftsmanship lies in the constructional details and the standardisation of individual parts as well as in the history and interpretation of everyday objects.
