Making life easier
Crisis as the mother of invention.
Life crises, economic crises, relationship crises – they all have a positive aspect in that we evolve or are forced to evolve coping strategies which often lead to interesting solutions.
With their intervention on the theme of Living in Crisis at the Hofmobiliendepot DANKLHAMPEL explore the positive, solution-oriented facet of crises – based on notions such as crises revealing new potential or necessity being the mother of invention.
Under the title of Making Life Easier the installation aims at treating the subject of crisis with a lighter touch, showing three contemporary interior situations with a humorous twist that DANKLHAMPEL have detected among their friends using ethnographic principles.
These ‘scenarios for living’ reflect individual crises which have nevertheless uncovered creative potential.
Arising as makeshift arrangements, these spatial solutions were taken as a point of departure by DANKLHAMPEL and elaborated into intelligent and simple product and/or furniture prototypes.
The way in which DANKLHAMPEL’s installation is displayed takes its cue from the presentation of the various spatial scenarios in the museum’s permanent exhibition (hunting room, bathroom, etc.): three different ‘scenarios for living’ will be shown, not as alcoves in a room, however, but as true-to-scale photographs of the real-life situation. The items of furniture or products developed as solutions to the crisis situation are shown as tangible objects which are intended to make day-to-day living and thus life in general a little easier for others whose lives are rocked by crises.
The project is being created in collaboration with the photographer Timotheus Tomicek.
Kathrina Dankl and Lisa E. Hampel have worked together since 2006. Their portfolio, ranging from vehicle design to designer chocolates, is broad and varied. The combination of practical design work and the theoretical study of material culture has proved especially fruitful during the course of their collaboration and reinforces their reflective approach to design.
