A growing Collection
The objects in the former Imperial Depot of Court Movables are not only relics of the Imperial style of living but they also illustrate the history of Viennese furniture and furnishing. Therefore this is a growing collection.
The acquisition policy pursued over the past few years has focused primarily on the stimulating interrelation with historical pieces, in addition to the criteria of quality and historical significance of the objects. The most prominent examples in this respect are the dining-room furniture designed by Adolf Loos for Eugen Stössler 1899 and the apartment furnished by Ernst A. Plischke for Lucie Rie in 1928.
From 1963 to 1973, Ernst A. Plischke guided the Meisterklasse for architecture at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts. This architecture class besides the Meisterklasse for interior design at the school of Applied Arts – has developed into a laboratory of modern Viennese furniture design. Among Plischke’s former students are the architects Alessandro Alvera (graduated in 1971) and Luigi Blau (graduated in 1973) as well as the artist Heinz Frank, whose furniture designs are characterised by a creative interest in Viennese traditions.
