Habsburg Hall

The House of Austria was inseparably connected with the Habsburg dynasty for seven centuries. The continuity of succession as a prerequisite for maintaining power and securing the crown-lands determined the Habsburgs´ policy of alliances and war diplomacy as well as their marriages and family life. After the male line had died out in the 18th century, Empress Maria Theresia overcame the problems of succession and, blessed with a large offspring, she became the ancestress of the Habsburg-Lorraine family.

Birth death, festivities and political events, religious and secular ceremonies as well as everyday life are reflected by the objects which surrounded the individual members of the family. These objects sometimes shed light on the different characters of the members of the Imperial family. Conversely, the objects for personal use become valuable and important, as relics of the past shown in the museum, through myths, history and stories centred around these persons.
