Gentleman´s room in the German neo-Renaissance style
Bedroom furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl
Historicism
Towards the middle of the 19th century the Biedermeier style was superseded by Historicism. Individual rooms were now furnished in different styles. Here we have a gentleman´s room in the German neo-Renaissance style, with carved and lathe-turned furniture in oak and chairs upholstered in gold-stamped leather and red velvet.
One of the most prominent characteristics of historical interior design was the idea of matching ensembles. This bedroom furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl made in vienna around 1880 is a typical example of this. Each piece in the ensemble, whether it is the bed, the bedside table or the wardrobes, features the same motif, a broken pediment with a vase at its centre.
