"Prince Eugene" Room
Imperial Field Marshall Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), commander-in-chief of the Imperial troops, went down in history as the victor over the Turks. He was an art lover and patron as well as the owner of splendid palaces. The art of war has made him one of the richest princes in Europe. In 1725, Prince Eugene, who had a passion for hunting, bought the domain of Hof in Lower Austria, a hunting seat close to his palace at Obersiebenbrunn, which Emperor Karl VI had given him as a present. The prince commissioned Lukas von Hildebrandt to alter and enlarge Schloßhof Palace and to lay out one of the most beautiful baroque parks with water-works. His position and wealth enabled him to have the room of the palace decorated with the most valuable luxury goods imported from the Far East, which had come into fashion among the higher nobility: furniture made of exotic woods, decorative objects coated with Chinese or Japanese lacquer, Chinese bamboo wallpaper and Chintzes from India with designs printed by hand. These Chintzes were used for decorating Prince Eugene’s apartment and upholding his furniture. Empress Maria Theresa took over these exotic furnished rooms in 1755. She had them partially redecorated with those Indian cloths which she had bought from Prince Eugene’s estate and which had been stored in the Depot of Movables.
