An exhibition for Vienna Design Week 2021

Basket-weaving is among the earliest of human cultural technologies. Basketwork elements such as wickerwork came back into fashion in the furniture design of the Viennese Modern movement around 1900.

The Vienna Furniture Museum holds one of the largest collections of furniture made by the Prag-Rudnik basketwork manufactory, which was supplied with designs by a number of artists including Koloman Moser. The exhibition highlights these historic creations.

For Vienna Design Week 2021 we are focusing on this furniture and interrogating its relevance for contemporary young Austrian designers. Above the ticket office foyer a ‘display island’ specially designed by Robert Rüf features objects by COPA, Soda Designers, WerKnussbaumer and Lisa Stolz that take up and develop the theme of basketwork in furniture design.
