Lightopia Ausstellungsplakat
History and future of light design. An exhibition of the Vitra Design Museum and the Fundação EDP in the Imperial Furniture Museum in Vienna (16 September 2015 - 10 January 2016)

Appropriate for the dark season of the year, starting on 16 September 2015 we are focusing on the theme of light: the exhibition “Lightopia” lights up the museum - lux fiat! On display are visions of the future formed of light, famous light sources, lamps and luminaires from the history of design and fascinating installations in which you can experience the creative power of light.

Light has always had a formative influence on our environment and still does, fascinating its designers. Thanks to new technologies, the potential of light design has expanded radically in recent years.

“Lightopia” is the first comprehensive exhibition in Austria to celebrate this transformation and place it in a cultural and historical context.

On display are ground-breaking exhibits chosen from a luminaire collection that has never yet been shown in Austria, from the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. They include creations by such designers as Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Achille Castiglioni, Gino Sarfatti and Ingo Maurer.

Taking centre stage in the exhibition are designs by contemporary designers and artists like Olafur Eliasson, Troika, Front Design, Joris Laarman, realities:united and mischer’traxler, all manifesting the new possibilities of designing with light.
