The spring exhibition at the Imperial Furniture Collection Vienna is dedicated to the furniture designer and architect Marcel Breuer (1902 - 1981), one of the most prominent exponents of the "Bauhaus" style.
Marcel Ljos Breuer was born in Hungary, and as the "inventor" of tubular steel furniture is regarded as one of the most influential 20th century designers, his ideas on the home inspiring later generations of furniture designers and interior architects.
After emigration in 1939, he initially took up a post professor at Harvard University in the USA, before beginning a second career as architect. his buildings, above all houses, university and office buildiings, churches and museums, were in the Modernist style and were regarded as models of inspiration around the world in the 1950s and 60s.
The retrospective has been created by the Vitra Design Museum and for the first time honours both the designer and the architect Marcel Breuer, and is thus the first exhibition that befittingly documents the two sides of Marcel Breuer's creativity.
